Neither the time, nor the inclination

For the past six months the frequency of posting new entries has steadily declined. As an old friend of mine would say, “ya think so, Will? Ya think so?” Others may be thinking, “NO DUH!"

In keeping with my brevity of late I will offer the short answer first. Simply put, I have lost interest in maintaining a personal web log. I have neither the time, nor the inclination.

Now to get into the long answer. The blog served me best when I was miserable in my various software QA & test jobs, stressed by long commutes, and seriously depressed. It was therapeutic, it kept me connected to a large group of people and it gave me a place to vent my frustrations. For the past six months I haven't had any frustrations to vent and despite what some folks may think, I no longer need it for therapy. The only thing that I have to complain about is that I have nothing to complain about. With the one tiny exception that Battlestar Galactica is moving to Sunday nights.

Since I brought up Battlestar Galactica, I won't be writing about it anymore either. Yes, I still love the show, but I don’t have anything substantial to write. I fear spoilers so much that I don’t look at web pages for news and information and therefore I have nothing to give you that you can’t find yourself. I am more than happy to engage in lively and real face to face (or phone to phone) discussion about the show, but no more writing and forum-esque discussion threads. And if I haven’t convinced you to watch BSG by now, I never will.

I have nothing to say politically that has not already been said by others ad-nauseum. If you want amusing political commentary watch The Daily Show with John Stewart. I like that show and John says what I feel, but he does it with better humor and wit. Me, I just rant and try to be funny. Sometimes I hit the mark.

I also have no comments on the war in Iraq. We all know that I have been against it from the start. Seriously, how interesting would it be to read, “I told you so” again and again? Answer: it wouldn’t.

On the subject of religion all I can say is that reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis has made a big difference in my spiritual life. I have the best understanding of God – and I am speaking of God in the plural three here – than I have ever had in my whole life. The book is a bit of a challenge to read simply because of Lewis’ style, but he makes more sense than anyone I have ever spoke too about Christianity. My spiritual life has made a very positive turn.

I still feel the same way about SUVs, the environment and many other things and there is nothing new to write on those subjects either.

Things with my family have been improving over the past year and continue to do so. No more stories of assman and his crazy ride. I have come to a better understanding and appreciation of my parents and brothers.

You may be wondering that if things are going so good for me then why don’t I write about it all? It’s a simple answer really. It’s because I am too engaged in it all to take the time to write. I am busy and fulfilled at work and have even won a recognition award. I am so busy during the day that when I get home I just don’t want to write. I want to spend time with Jenne and the cats, my friends and playing games. I am enjoying a couple of Xbox 360 games, a new board game and playing World of Warcraft with Jenne. I am reading a scifi book, working on a few photography projects for our church and making many new friends. Besides, all I would be writing is that I had another fine day at the office, an easy commute and that life is, in general pretty good. People don’t want to read that over and over, and more importantly, I don't want to write it over and over. From my experience with blogs people want to read about mean bosses, stupid co-workers, blinky lights and ass-hats and ass-clowns on the road. My job, nay, my career with T. Rowe has none of that and we all know that it’s more entertaining to read witticisms about co-workers with bizarre made up names, a suck-ass job and a lousy commute than it is to read happy fluff about a good career. I work with awesome people on an awesome team and all is well.

The blog served its purpose. I hope that you enjoyed it while it lasted. If you want to keep up with me go and visit my Flickr Photo pages from time to time. That's where I will be.

So, so long and thanks for all the fish. So say we all.

I guess everyone either knew you were pulling the plug already or have stopping checking in because of erratic posting because I'm the first to leave a comment here in the 28 hours since yo announced your blogging retirement...

I for one will miss the miserable Will. ;-)

As I approach my 5 year anniversary of nearly daily, and for a while there twice daily, posting I too am questioning my desire to continue. But I'll probably just keep on prattling on because it has become part of me and I feel weird when I miss a night, even when I have nothing of consequence to say.

You're welcome for the fish.
Happy Motoring,
Brian

It's been a wild ride. I hope you check in from time to time, when something really noteworthy happens! Meanwhile, I'll just have to pester you by phone and email. Peace, man, and MTFBWY!

I think congratulations are in order since ending the blog means everything is well! Enjoy spending your time enjoying life, rather than having to vent! Congrats again!

Nothing wrong with having things go right for a change! But I will miss your entries, you gave us a lot of great entertainment even if it did raise your blood pressure to dangerous levels!

I hope you're not going to delete your blog, Will. You might at some date choose to start writing again, whatever the reason. I would've read this sooner but, y'know, finals are kicking my ass. Best o' luck to you, don't be a stranger, stranger. You still need to get out to a happy hour at some point.

Sorry to see you go but happy to hear that life is treating you so well. Hope it continues to do so!

This is looking more like an extended break, with a possible revamp/rebranding and eventual return. The site will stay up. I may change the title (or make a new entry) to indicate that I am taking a break.

When you say you have nothing to write... well all of a sudden you start thinking of things to write about. Anyway, I am taking an extended break for now.

Peace,
~Will

I think that the whole blogging thing is trending down accross the board. I'm certainly done as well and W,F&DT is going bye-bye as of the end of the year. I'll stick with Flickr as well.

If you only wrote about stressful crap then I'm glad to hear that you have nothing to write about anymore.

Merry Christmas, Will, to you and yours.
