Battlestar Friday 11.17.06 ~ Getting Your BSG Game On

This week’s BSG Friday we take a quick look at board and card games based on Battlestar Galactica. I say quick because it is 7:40 PM and I have to leave soon to get over to Steve-O’s for BSG, Beer and Xbox games at 9:00!

The first game based on the classic Battlestar Galactica was a kids game and I do still have my copy of this one. Apart from the artwork of the game box, pieces and cards this game really has nothing to do with BSG. Up to four players play Colonial Viper pilots who’s mission it is to go out, retrieve a disabled Cylon Raider (a silver piece of plastic) and be the first to return it to their squadron’s hanger deck. The game mechanics are so generic that the game could easily be repackaged as, oh let’s say, Mother Goose and the Magic Cookie. Each player takes a piece (based on a Mother Goose character) and must be the first to retrieve the magic cookie and bring it back to their ginger bread house. Substitute any theme. So, not what I would really call a BSG game.

The next game was by FASA and attempted to be a more serious attempt at a classic war game with a Colonial Battlestar and squadrons of Vipers taking on a Cylon Base Star and squadrons of Raiders. Most FASA games used the same mechanic, which was a derivative of the Star Fleet Battles game system. To keep this short and simple, it was a naval combat game with the battleships, destroyers and aircraft carries replaced with space ships. I never bought this game because I already owned Star Fleet Battles and I knew FASA’s reputation for pumping out the same game with different artwork and slightly modified rules.

The other two games in this week’s entry are card games. I am not a card game player. I never got into the gamer crack of collectable cards games and the Colonial game of Pyramid held the same interest for me as Star Trek’s three-dimensional chess, which is to say, none.

We’ll that wraps up this week’s entry. Now it’s time to head over to Steve-O’s and plop down in front of the big screen TV with a frosty beer and enjoy this week’s episode.

SO SAY WE ALL!

Did you see where BSG is moving to Sunday nights in January?

MOTHER FRACKERS! NOOOOO! GHODS DAM IT!

Friday night is a great night. BSG, Beer an Video Games! Sunday nights! That's traditionally reserved for Jenne and I.

I hate when networks do this crap. OH let's panic and move shows around. Sunday night is no good for this. Fox runs it extremely popular animated shows. SciFi is moving into an area of even bigger competition for ratings. Are they trying to kill BSG?

Battlestar Galactica moving to Sunday nights

SCI FI Channel will move its hit series Battlestar Galactica to Sunday nights, TV Guide is reporting and the Chicago Tribune has confirmed. Starting January 21, the network will resume Season Three of the show at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on Sunday nights.

The show has struggled in the ratings since the new season premiered in October. SCI FI bumped the series from a summer premiere -- alongside former Friday night companions Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis -- to a fall premiere.

All three original series have seen lower ratings this year, with SG-1 quickly cancelled after its record-setting tenth season.

Battlestar Galactica's new timeslot competition will include ABC's Brothers and Sisters and CBS's Without a Trace.

New episodes of Galactica currently air every Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific.

(Thanks to Maureen and Paul Foust for the tip!)
