The Hardest Thing to Do... OR Damn, This Really Sucks

I did something today that I found really hard to do. Actually, that’s a serious kind of understatement. It was really, really, REALLY HARD to do. I have been putting it off for several months now, but it had to be done. The time was right to get it over with. Only a very select few knew about the damage that had been done and how it was negatively affecting me, and my passion. My world has been out of focus and our relationship was strained. I can tell you that it’s incredibly difficult to let go, to sign the papers and hand it all over to a clerk behind a counter. Time seemed to crawl. I now face six long, agonizing weeks…

… before I get my Nikon D70 back from Nikon repair. Yep, after three months of dealing with the damage to the CDD via post-production Photoshop work, I went to Penn Camera, explained the damage, signed the repair order and receipt and had my third eye sent off to get the CCD replaced. It’s better to show you the damage via a section of an untouched photo from our Ocracoke trip. Now, it is not dust or debris on the lens. It is in every singe image I have made since I made this image. Which was a day or two after I got fired my last job. These were the first images for the red spot and line to appear in. I have been dealing with it ever since. Well, today I had to go to Greenbelt, MD to see my lawyer for a totally un-photo-related subject. Well, on the way back I thought that I should stop in at Penn Camera and do the deed, and I could also look at/maybe buy a new camera bag. My camera bag is also damaged. More specifically the plastic clips on my current bag’s strap broke and cannot be replaced, so I have no shoulder strap. Not easy to make photos when you have to carry a camera bag in one hand and the camera in the other. Yeah, yeah, why don’t I just sit the bag down when I want to make a photo? DUH! You try it. You try carrying a camera bag in one hand, camera in the other, then having to sit the bag down and pick it up and sit it down and pick it up and carry it like that. It sucks. Anyway, this has all sucked. My third eye gone for six weeks, a busted camera bag… Cheesus H. Rice, I already have the shakes. I just can’t write about this anymore, so I am off to drown my woes in merlots. Damn this really sucks.

Will;
My good friend. If it gets to bad, you are more than welcome to come over and play with my D100.
Just call first and I will let it know you are coming.

Will,
Sorry to hear about your camera troubles. Look at it as an opportunity. Dust off the old film camera and relive the days of making images on plastic.

Ugh, no fun. Do you have any idea what caused it?

Geren,
Not a clue, and neither do the guys at Penn Camera. I am so jonesing for my camera back and it's only day one without it. WHAAAAAAAAAA

Thom,
I just may take you up on your offer. I will let you know.

Best regards,
~Will

Will,

I'm nowhere as attached to my D70 as you are but I know how you feel. I will be taking my camera in on Monday for the dreaded Blinking Green light of Death problem. It better be covered by Nikon, even though my camera is 2-1/2 years old. Good luck with yours and hopfully Nikon isn't that busy this time of the year and you'll get it back sooner than the 2 weeks.

Nikon repair may surprise you. My room mate had his shutter stick on his D70s (after climbing down a steep slope to get a waterfall shot in Yellowstone). He sent it to Nikon and the turnaround time was less than 2 weeks. The bonus was that it was a N/C repair.

may you be as lucky!

(He did have a d70 backup body so we were spared hearing him whine the whole week we were in Montana.)
