So... 1,000 volunteers, 23,300 candles, so that's 23.3 candles per volunteer... and it takes six hours? Oh, well, I guess you get what you pay for. Or maybe not -- it would probably take as long or longer if those 1,000 folks were all government employees.

Seriously, I'll bet it was spectacular. And, as always, nice photo!

Your calculations are very simplistic and there is much that you didn't take into consideration. There's check in, distrubition of supplies, getting the volunteers to their assigned place on the field, yadda, yadda, yadda. It's a very involved process that invloves a touch of surveying skill. The candles are laid out very evenly spaced, so that when you look at them, from any angle, they all appear in perfect lines, like a military cemetary. That takes time. The volunteers are mostly comprised of Boyscouts and their leaders. You can imagine that the scouts can be a bit rambunctious at times (boys will be boys) and every now and then it's a little like herding cats, but it all gets done. A full third of the six hour setup is lighting all those candles, and adults do that.

My calculations took in only the numbers given, and as my second paragraph suggested, were not entirely serious. Like if I said "Oh, Boy Scouts, that explains it!"

Again, I bet it was spectacular, and well worth six hours of herding cats on your part. Let me be clear on this: I am amazed at the amount of cool stuff you manage to get done, Will.

Thanks Thomas. Ya know, sometimes I amaze even myself. ;-)
