ALERT! THERE IS NO NEW BATTLESTAR GALACTICA EPISODE TONIGHT! The SciFi Channel is instead running a Stargate SG-1 marathon of some sorts that I couldn't possibly care less about.
As for me, I have nothing new to comment on about BSG this week. I do have a lot of thoughts about where the show has come from and where it seems to be going, but I have to get them all down and organized. Maybe over the weekend. So, have a great and safe holiday weekend. So say we all!
Fuck SG-1. I saw it last week - it was appropriately titled "Deux ex Machina" and the problem was solved by a big starship and a fucking TRANSPORTER BEAM. What a horrible show.
Seen the photos of Michelle Forbes as Adm. Cain? She's got an effin' mullet.
Posted by: Malnurtured Snay on September 2, 2005 04:37 PMI still don't quite get the new BSG, but dammit, I'm going to sit down and watch every episode. I'm only about three or four into the first season, though I've seen other, more recent episodes.
That episode of SG1 was titled "ex-Deus Machina" and it was about an overthrown Goa'uld -- who used to be worshiped as a god -- covertly causing political and corporate trouble here on Earth. Does the title make more sense now?
The claim that BSG is better than a show you don't like is hardly high praise. Why is BSG good? One possible answer: I'll watch anything with Michelle Forbes in it.
Posted by: Thomas G. Atkinson on September 16, 2005 02:23 AMThomas, this is a two week old entry and I doubt anyone will come back this far to look at any of the comments. Anyway, here's my reply.
Some reasons I like BSG in no particular order.
* I love the character development. They even develop the lesser characters.
* They aren't follwing the formula of other scifi shows and by that I mean they don't wrap everything up in one hour. I have seen enough of SGA to see that they follow the Trek formula. Introduce the plot, things get really bad, YIKES it's the last commercial break we better introduce the technobabble be all to end all solution. Problem solved.
* BSG let's the story develop and continue. They take their time with a story.
* I love the way it is filmed. The camera work comes close to a documentary feel.
* It looks and feels "real" to me. I believe that they are on spaceships. Whereas the other shows look like sets.
* Galactica shares something with Star Wars that makes that universe as real to me as the BSG one. It's lived in, worked in, dirty, stuff is falling apart, there's a rough unpolished edge that makes it lookied "lived in." The other shows are too clean and polished.
* All of the characters feel real to me. They all have issues and some of the characters have really bad issues. Not a one of them is perfect in that Picard/Riker kind of way.
* There is NO technobabble used to solve problems.
* The acting is great and very believable. The whole cast is doing a great job.
* They wound and even kill characters that are important, that the writers took time to develop and let the audience get to know.
* It's been 95% unpredictable with cool twists and surprises each week.
* The effects are really good.
Do you want me to go on?
MTFBWY... so say we all,
