Rest in Peace

Very recently two notable American Civil War historians and writers passed away

Brian C. Pohanka, 50, a Civil War historian who advised filmmakers, preserved battlefields, reenacted troop movements and dressed the part, died of cancer June 15 at his home in Alexandria. I met Mr. Pohanka on several occassions at Civil War re-enactments. I have even photographed him in his uniform.

And just this week novelist and historian Shelby Foote, whose Southern storyteller's touch inspired millions to read his multivolume work on the Civil War, has died. He was 88. I have read (or listened to audio books) of several of his works. I never did get to meet him.

Both will be greatly missed by the Civil War community.
