Ferry Boat to Ocracoke Island

Here are some of the sights Jenne and I saw from the deck of the Hatteras to Ocracoke ferry. The forty minute ferry runs every half hour during the day, is part of the NC DOT and is considered an extension of NC Route 12 and is therefore free. The boats hold up to thirty cars maximum and the cars get packed in pretty tight. There is however room enough to get out of the car, stand on the take and take in the scenery.

Three Laughing Gulls Yes, these sea birds are called Laughing Gulls and if you ever hear their call you will understand why. They are perched on top of the antena and light array on the roof of the ferry's control cabin. They are getting a free ride too.

Ferry from Ocracoke This is one of the half dozen or so ferries and it is headed north out of Ocracoke to the southern tip of Hatteras Island. Laughing Gulls swarm around the ferries looking for a free ride and free food from passengers.

Fishing Boats Fishing for a living and for sport are big industries all along the Outer Banks. These boats are headed in to the docks after a long day out on the Atlantic Ocean.

PowerCrossing.jpg
Electric Eel Power to the lower islands arrives via underwater cables from the main land. This cable runs from the main land to Hatteras and then to Ocracoke.

Maybe, in such a place clearly made for a slow pace, the gulls just find human activity funny. God knows I find a lot of it funny up here, and I'm not, strictly speaking, a bird.

Taking the ferry sure does beat the Circle of Death, does it not? I could get used to living on an island, away from the hustle and bustle...
