With the return of Spring Jenne and I are seeing the return of many birds and animals to our yard, the brush line and field behind our home. Living on the highest ridge line in Howard County, Maryland has it's advantages for bird watchers. This small woodpecker visits the suet feeders that we hang in our yard. Along with the suet feeders - which are up year round - Jenne put up the hummingbird feeders this past weekend. We are hoping to the hummingbirds soon as well. I know what kind of woodpecker is in the above photograph... do you? Leave your answers in the comments.
Lovely woodpecker pic! I want to say downey but I'm not sure...
Posted by: Uber-Pea on April 19, 2005 07:49 AMWe have a woodpecker that lives in an empty, tree-filled lot across the street. Sometimes it will fly over and peck on one of our trees. I find it interesting that such a little beak can make such a big noise.
Posted by: Jazzy G on April 19, 2005 09:20 AMWe have these insane starlings that have declared Jihad most holy on all other birds in the neighborhood. Lots of squawking, feathers on the ground every morning... you know how it goes. Avian gangbangers. Birdz 4 life.

Posted by: Joe on April 19, 2005 10:46 AMI could be selfcentered and say it's a REDHEADED WOOOOOODPECKER (not enough red on it's head) but I won't.............it's a DOWNY.
Posted by: tom on April 19, 2005 05:57 PMto be exact....it's a HAIRY DOWNY.......remember....if you can see the bill, it's a HAIRY..........just thought you would like to know...........but then again, I'm sure you already knew..................
Posted by: tom on April 19, 2005 06:03 PMI think that's a pilated woodpecker, but I could be mistaken. they make a hell of a noise if it is one.
