Battlestar Friday

viper.jpg
The Colonial Viper. Trivia question for you BSG fans; what model is this baby and who's is it? Extra points if you also know his/her callsign?

My commute would be so awesome flying well above the circle of death and avoiding the traffic below. I could land her on the roof of the parking garage next door. Now where would I land in my neighborhood? Heck, if I had one of these I wouldn't even come to work. I would zip around doing the airshow circuit. I can do some serious daydreaming and right now, waiting for second season I am going through serious Battlestar Galactica withdrawal here. To combat that withdrawal I have found a cool BSG site on the web. You can check it out by clicking here. So say we all.

Luke Skywalkers Trainer! Have a good weekend!

Joe, you started this. ;-)

Now to get real geeky. Everyone knows I am huge Star Wars fan (with the qualification: not of EP1). The Incom T-65 X-wing (and no, I did not look that up in a book or on the Internet... I just know that) is one of my favorite star fighters of all time and in all of the Star Wars PC space combat games it was my fighter of choice. However I wouldn't put it up against a Colonial Viper Mark II and expect it to survive. The Viper has a much smaller target profile and is superior in manuverability (it can flip 180 degress to fire at targets on its six) and speed and fires projectiles at an extrememly high rate. The X-Wing on the other hand is a large target, no where near as manuverable or as fast and energy shields, although good against the energy beams of laser/blaster weapons are not as effective against mass driver/projecticle weapons. Both the viper and X-wing have FTL and hyperdrive (resepctively) which allows them to make limited space jumps. The advantage of the X-Wing is the R2 unit and in Luke Skywaler's case... the Force. You can also not discount pilot skill. Skywalker vs. Starbuck? IMHO the Viper is the better of the two, but they are both fictional, so unless someone puts them both into a computer combat sim we won't get the chance to do a one on one comparison. I would so love to see a psace combat sim that had all of the starfighters from the Sci-Fi movies and TV shows of the past thirty years. That would so rule.

The Raptor has limited FTL capability, not the viper.

I must have been thinking of the BSG XBox game because the Vipers in that have limited FTL jump capability.

The modern Mark-VII vipers we saw in the pilot -- and the lone surviving one Apollo flies every now and then -- might have FTL (maybe that's what you were thinking of?)

You'll be happy to know that BSG's second season premieres in July! (I know I am!)

Are you a big enough fan of the X-Wing to put your money where your mouth is?

Buy it now price is $85k....

If it could actually fly... sure. I wish the S-Foils would close too. Gotta admit that a full size X-Wing would be totally awesome. Question is where would I put it? I don't even have room for the much smaller Viper II
