Columns

Columns, Photgraph made on February 20th, 2005 at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD.

I haven't photographed much of anything since that trip to Fort McHenry in February. I have been digging through my photographs to find something that I haven't posted before, but I am not finding much that I like. I have a few things from my February visit to Fort McHenry, but I don't think any of them are really primo stuff. I tend to be a very harsh critic of my own work - the harshest - and although I do have lots of photographs I just don't think that they are my best work.

I don't think the above image is near my best, but I think it's decent. What I personally like about it is the composition, the repetitiveness of the three columns, the strong contrast of the black and white and the contrast between the round columns and the rectangular bricks. The big reason I haven't had much photography posted on my site is because the weather for the past month has been atrocious and in a cycle of rain from Friday through Sunday night, and then nice Monday afternoon through Thursday night. I honestly believe that it should be a natural law that crappy weather only be allowed to occur during the workweek and never on the weekends. Of course during the week I am at work right at the best times for photography and believe me when I say that Reston, VA is not the most photogenic place anyway. The landscape is covered with very dull office buildings, stark complexes and far too many shopping centers, so even when it is nice there's nothing to photograph. I am starving for sunny days and nice temps. I am sure that you really need some good sunny days too. All this wet gray weather has me down emotionally and creatively… seriously down. I really need several consecutive days of sun and warmth and good photographic light. I need to get out and make photographs and I was hoping to do that on Sunday, but all predictions are for scattered showers, mostly cloudy skies and high winds. So it will be another day inside. But ya know what? Being inside isn't too bad. I have time with Jenne and the cats. I can work on some personal projects, and I can catch up on some reading and video games. That's all better than being at work.
