Chinese Palace Horse Detai,l Ellicott City, MD October 16, 2004. And you thought I went to Asia.
"Hast thou given the horse strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? The glory of his nostrils is terrible.
He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting." Job 39:19-25
"How far can you bear me?" I [Gandalf] said to Gwaihir.
"Many leagues", said he, "but not to the ends of the earth. I was sent to bear tidings not burdens."
"Then I must have a steed on land," I said, "and a steed surpassingly swift, for I have never had such need for haste before."
"Then I will bear you to Edoras, where the Lord of Rohan sits in his halls," he said, "for that is not very far off."
And I was glad, for in the Riddermark of Rohan the Rohirrim, the Horse-lords dwell, and there are no horses like those that are bred in that great vale between the Misty Mountains and the White.

"Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountains, like a wind in the meadow,
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow,
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?"
Tolkien was an absolute genius with words.
Posted by: Rob on November 16, 2004 10:15 AMTolkien was a genius of the Anglo-Saxon tounge. Most people don't realize it, but he deleberately avoided words derived from latin sources. There are fewer than 5 per page throughout the LotR.
And nice horse. You can find all sorts of odd photo subjects in Eliciott City.
