Before steaming...

... and after steaming.
Contray to what many people think, Maryland Blue Crabs are actually beautiful shades of blue and green before being steamed. Their natural color is not orange, as they are quite often pictured on advertisements for seafood restaurants. You would not believe the number of people I have met - mostly non-Marylanders - who think that live crabs of any kind are orange or red in color. Jenne and I went to my parent's Manchester, MD home today for a spur of the moment picnic and crab feast. We had a wonderful time with the family and caught up with my folks who just returned from a two week cross country drive out to Neveda and back. Jenne spent a lot of time with my mom and sister-in-laws and as usual I spent a good deal of time playing with my nieces and nephews. I even roamed up into the woods to make some photographs. Later in the afternoon we were glad to help finish off a bushel of Maryland Blue Crabs from the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay. I was surprised that a bushel only cost $45.00! During the summer a bushel could cost as much as $175 or more! However that doesn't stop many Marylanders from eating them. Eating crabs is a Maryland tradition after all.

Mmmmmm, crabs....I never get them anymore since I moved to Virginia! They're one of the things I miss about Maryland!

Posted by: Tatianna on November 8, 2004 02:10 PMThe first time that I saw a live Maryland Blue Crab was about 3 or 4 years ago in the Calvert Marine Museum!
