Jenne and I took a trip to Kilmarnock, VA this past weekend to celebrate our good friend Ted's birthday and hang out with his family. Ted and his brothers adopted me into their family a long time ago and they always make Jenne and I feel most welcome at family gatherings. Kilmarnock - where his mom lives and gatherings are held because of its central location between the brothers- is way down Virginia Route-3 - AKA Historyland Highway - near the end of the Northern Neck penninsula between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers. Why is Rte-3 called the Historyland Highway? There are several reasons, but I list the most significant here; the birthplaces of Presidents George Washington and James Madison are just off of Rte-3. General Robert E. Lee was also born there, and historic Christ Church - built in 1735 - is along this road. We took a nice leisurly drive down on Friday giving ourselves time to stop at several historic sites and a couple of wineries. We bought several bottles of wine from Ingleside Vineyards, which we will enjoy over the next few weeks. Stopping frequently also gave me the time I needed to stretch my back and fill a 256mb memory card with photos. The time at the home was spent playing games, eating & drinking and watching movies, which is a typical gathering. On the way back we stopped at historic Christ Church and were fortunate enough to be there when it was open, so we were able to go inside this very austere place of worship. I will be posting a photo essay of Christ Church on Thursday for the Thursday Challenge of Simple. We also stopped at a few visitor centers and picked up maps and brochures for planning future trips into Ole Virginnie.

hmm. Not a very friendly looking winged creature, there, the cerub...and I'm not sure he would have been before his repair either. But I really like the shadowing.

Whoa, a Cthulhu cherub! All he needs are some tentacles!

Cool shots. We have herons all over the place here in Fairfax, but I never seem to have my camera.
