Clouds on Glass
The mirrored windows of a modern office building reflect the late afternoon sky of fall here in Ellicott City. This is my submission for this week's Photo Friday challenge of Clouds. I shot this image last fall while commuting home. The sky was gorgeous and full of whispy bright white clouds, which is unusual for Maryland. Ninety percent of the time Maryland skies are either clear blue - known photographically as a bald sky, which I find very boring in photographs - or an overcast flat shade of gray. However on this particular fall day the conditions were perfect and I knew just the location to shoot this image.
There is a modern office building nearby that sits on a ridge facing south east and the first time I saw it I knew I had to use its mirroed windows in a sky or sunset shot. I was just waiting. It really pays off to know your area well and make notes about sites to shoot photos when conditions are right, like this image. The only digital manipulation done to the above image was some very minor cropping, adding a virtual matt board (I really feel that presentation is important), and adding my copyright mark. That was it. Absolutely no other digital manipulation of the image was performed. I did 95% of the work right in my camera on location. I set up my Minolta Dimage 7i on the tripod, put on a circular polarizing filter, set the white balance to bright sun, set the ISO to 200, cropped as best I could in the view finder (it was still a little crooked when I looked at it at home), underexposed by 1 f-stop, shot over a dozen frames as the clouds swirled around, and PRESTO... Clouds on Glass.
A word about how I shoot photos. I shot over a dozen images of the front of the office building to get what I feel is just the right photograph. I never just shoot one frame of any subject. I shoot a minimum of three and usually quite often two to four times that number. All the while I am adjusting exposure (also called bracketing), changing the cropping, adjusting filters, changing depth of field, and switching between horizontal and vertical formats. When I get home I evaluate all of the images and pick the best to present. I do as much of my photographic work on location as I can so I don't have to do a lot at home.

It's always interesting to learn how others go about getting their shots. I try to exercise a similar routine whenever I can, especially when the light and colors are changing from minute to minute (as was probably the case with your Clouds photo).
