Happy Birthday to the Donut

No matter how you spell it - donut or doughnut - today we celebrate its birthday. On this day in 1847 the donut as we know it was invented by young American, Hanson Gregory. He is the first person to put the hole in the donut making it the deep fried pastry that we know and love.

Why did he put a hole in it? No one knows, but from that forward the hole remained. Did you know that Americans eat an estimated 10 billion (10 to the tenth power) donuts annually? Well they do. Dunkin Donuts claims to sell four million donuts a day. How many does Kripsy Creme sell? I have no clue. Were you aware that donuts can also be used as an economic indicator? Well they can. In prosperous times more dough is used, and the hole shrinks. An expansion in the diameter of the hole is a measure of tighter times. Now I can't write about donuts and not mention Homer Simpson. If Homer made his own food pyramid donuts - along with beer - would be at the top. In an episode of the Simpsons, Homer discovers that in Quebec, his beloved donuts become "les beignes Americains" and in France, they are not donuts at all, but rather hoity-toity "patisseries." Whatever they are called all I can say is Mmmm... donuts... ahhhhhhhh. By the way my favorite are cake donuts with chocolate frosting. I am not a Krispy Creme fan. They are too heavy, too sticky and too sweet... even for me.

So what's your favorite kind of donut and do you prefer them with coffee, tea, or milk? Softball trivia question for you. What is the name of the chain of donut shops in Springfield in The Simpsons?

By the way I learn stuff like this from listeneing to Classical Music radio stations and watching The Simpsons of course.

What I want to know is this: is someone having a cake for the doughnut? Or would that be redundant?

My big discovery in the doughnut world has been the coconut ones that Shoppers Food sells: larger than the chains, cheaper, fresher, better. However, lately I have been unable to enjoy a doughnut with a nice hot cup of earl grey tea with lemon as breakfast. An hour or so later - WHUMP- blood sugar drop, shaking hands etc.

So remember, everybody: we're not as young as we used to be. Enjoy doughnuts responsibly. Lets be careful out there.

Lynn,...and add to that, friends don't let friends drive and eat donuts and drink coffee. You wouldn't believe what I see people doing on the commute to and from work with no hands on the wheel. Oh wait a minute, I think you would believ it.

"You wouldn't believe what I see people doing on the commute to and from work..."

Mostly in your rear-view and at very close range, eh?
