Black & White ~ Photo Friday Image for 05.28.04

StormTrooper.jpg
Soldier of the Empire
The dreaded Imperial Stormtrooper in his black and white helmet and armor is feared throughout the Star Wars universe. They form the long reaching arm of the Emperor and do his bidding to crush resistance and neutralize opposition to his will. They are totally loyal and cannot be bribed, seduced or blackmailed into betraying the New Order. To them all orders of the Emperor and issues of Imperial law are black and white. There are no shades of gray. You are either a loyal member of the Empire or an enemy.

Instead of presenting a black and white (or monochrome) image I thought it would be fun to shoot a color image of a black and white subject. The helmet in the above image is a scale mini-helmet made by Riddell, Inc. It is one small piece of my huge Star Wars memorabilia collection. The image was shot in color with my Minolta Dimage 7i and is presented full frame. The only work done in Photoshop was the removal of some dust from the eye. I side lit it using a desk lamp with a 100-watt bulb. I used my black Jedi Knight cloak as a background. I am such a SciFi and Fantasy geek!

I had to look twice. At first I thought you had bought a new Alien computer! Enjoy your week end!

Nice shot Will. I am often surprised and amazed at how some of the best shots are cobbled together with far less equipment, lights and drapes than used by the pros.

My shot this week (405) used a piece of white poster board sitting on the kitchen counter leaning up against the backsplash, and was lit by a small desk lamp. The camera was resting on top of a box of dominos with a single domino propping up the front of the lens. I used a highly precise triggering device to set the dominos in motion (my finger) and a not so precise shutter release (my other finger) 42 times to get the timing right. I'm sure there's a better way ... but simple often works.

Have a good weekend.

Very nice. That reminds me, I need to pre-order my DVD box of the original trilogy.

OK, How come that super looking Imperial Armor never protected any StormTrooper. It was about as good as the armor in Starship Troopers. Why even bother wearing it?

Actually I saw a bumper sticker that I think you'd have loved: Metaphors be with you.

Great capture, is this (ahem) your costume?

I remember that black Jedi cloak...

Hi Thomas,
I'm sure you do ;-) It's in the tops of the best, most useful and most thoughtful gifts I have ever received. Thanks for making it and giving it to me so many years ago. I cherish it for so many reasons.

By the way... what do you think of the photo?
Peace,
--Will
