Computer Bug
This little fellow hitched a ride on my shirt as I walked into the office today. The woods around the Reston, VA office building are buzzing with these seventeen year Cicadas. To bad computer and software bugs don't occur once every seventeen years! My job as a lead software QA analyst is to find bugs in software and computer systems. I've only rarely found real live bugs in or on a PC. I shot this image with my Minolta Dimage 7i set to 200mm macro mode. It is my submission for this week's Photo Friday challenge of Macro.
Awsome macro and colors. I've never seen a bug such as that one.
Posted by: Sofia on May 21, 2004 07:39 PMAwww! He's so cute! We don't have any in The County yet...either that or the enormous bird population in my yard is eating them as soon as they come out of the ground. It's a great background for him in color and theme.
Posted by: Lynn on May 21, 2004 09:44 PMIt's rather fitting that the Microsoft Windos logo thing just happens to be right there :-O. Great shot. I lived through the last Cicada invasion...I won't miss the noise (in Florida.)
Posted by: Randy on May 21, 2004 09:59 PMThose red eyes Cicadas are scarry little bugs, aren't they? How big are they in real? Great macro shot!
Posted by: Lorien on May 21, 2004 11:02 PMGreat macro...Are these the bugs that they're talking about around D.C.?
Posted by: Robin on May 21, 2004 11:28 PMThe bug in the photo is a seventeen year Cicada. It is indeed the bug all of the East Coast is talking about. They are harmless. They don't bite or sting and are not poisionous. They are poor fliers. You can just pick them up and look at them. They are also very loud.
Peace,
--Will
Where is the habid, and why he has not write the comment about the bug of computer cannot be the fix by reboot. The habid woiuld like the cicada, they are more the tasty than the kat and much the easier to catch.
Posted by: Clark on May 22, 2004 11:43 AMew, those eyes are ew! great macro shot though
Posted by: Tine on May 22, 2004 06:14 PMHave they gotten obnoxiously loud there too? As of the last couple days, they've been *deafening* on my street. I can hear them loud and clear over the rush hour traffic. Whew.
lol even inside they're running the show ah? :-)
a great shot, love the nature/machine conflict but glad to see the conflict doesn't go beyond the photo ;-)

Okay, how many of you out there know (or remember) where the term "bug" came from, with regards to computer problems?
Will, I know you know this one, so you can't answer.
Posted by: GerenM on May 23, 2004 07:39 AMNice. I like the sentiment ... and the picture. Great DOF. Good levels. Nice comp.
Haven't seen you here for a few weeks. Thought you might have packed it up. Glad you're back.
Posted by: Digital Quixote on May 23, 2004 06:14 PMI've got a soft spot for these guys too, even if they are loud enough to hear over my lawn mower. I've been snapping photos of them for a week. I'll post them as I get the time.
Geren: it's a little hazy, but didn't a spider get into an old post WW2-era mainframe and cause a malfunction?
