Black & White ~ PhotoTime Tuesday Image for 01.13.04

Mime Time

My first PhotoTime Tuesday image for 2004 is a B&W of everyones favorite B&W subject... a Mime. For this image I dug back into my archives. Back to - as Brian at Plog puts it - my 'Jimmy Olsen' days with the County Wide News of Carroll County, MD. That's back in the mid 1980s man! The above image was for a cover story about a new performance and magic group making its home in Westminster, MD. They were pretty heavy into mime stuff, such as the invisible box, the invisible tight rope, and the ever popular invisible pole up the butt. Be honest, you hate mimes. I know my friend Larry does. Hell, we all do, and clowns... clowns are evil. Just check with these guys at the World Anti-Mimimic League. They hate mimes and clowns more than anyone I personally know. Oh and remember that a mime is a great thing to waste!

The above image was shot on Ilford HP-5 and a Nikon FM2 - of which I own two -with a 70-200mm F3.5 zoom lens. I also did all of my own prosessing and printing. Ahh the glory days of a traditional wet darkroom. The image is presented exactly as it appreared in the newspaper.

And because I love The Simpsons, did you know that they did a couch gag where everyone in the family is a mime. They walk against the wind and then sit on a non-existant couch? Did you know that? I did.

The printing mimics that of older pictures, like from the 50s. It think it's great.

Nice composition, the lean of the body draws your eye to the bright white circle where you find a startled expressive face.

Oh, is that Shields or Yarnell? :-)

Larry is right! Mimes must DIE!!!

I think that this is the infamous Don Mullens. To my knowledge, he was Carroll County's only full-time mime.

Jeff, YES that is the guy's name! Although it is spelled Mullins. What a memory you have. I found an article called "An Excursion Into Puppetry: The Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers National Conference
by: Thomas Manley" and Thomas had this to say about Don "...the infamous mime Don Mullins... Really cool guy. Loud for a mime, though."
