Union Light Artillery in Action
Click on the above image for a larger view. Click on each link below to see another image from the Cedar Creek re-enactment. I can tell you that looking at and evaluating over almost two hundred images takes a long time, and those are just the digital images! I still need to get my ninety+ film images back from the lab. The majority of the actual battle was shot on film. Most everyone that knows me knows that when it comes to the American Civil War I am a staunch Union man, however I feel it important to try and maintain some semblance of unbiasedness when treating a re-enactment as a photographic subject (I still shoot more Union images than Confederate). I give coverage to both sides, although I do lean heavily to the Northern side. Besides, a re-enactment wouldn't be much fun if there were no Confederate re-enactors for the boys in blue to shoot at! Photos of the battles will be posted latter this week. For now please enjoy these images.

Post production image notes (AKA what I did at home with PhotoShop). All of the images in this entry were shot with a Minolta Dimage 7i. I used manual settings with the ISO set to 200 (it was a bright, bright sunshiney day). Autofocus
Union Light Artillery in Action: Color balance and some minor cropping.
Career US Cavalry Officer: Color balance only. presented full image.
Firing line of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, CSA: Color balance, minor cropping.
Union Cavalry on the move: Color balance and the removal of some port-a-potties on the upper right horizon. They didn't have port-a-potties in the CW.
Confederate color guard returns to camp: Color balance and cropping. Originally shot as a horizontal image.
The 15th New Jersey Volunteers Color Guard: Color balance, a little color de-saturation and the removal of non-period items from the hillside and horizon.
The Northern volunteer: Color balancing and tighter cropping than I had done in camera.
Starring down the barrel: Removal of color, contrast inhancement, tight cropping.
Like the images Will.........looking foreward to the rest of them.........ALL 200+ ;-)
Posted by: tperry on October 21, 2003 08:35 AMVery nice...for some reason I'm drawn to "down the barrel". Very foreboding and powerful.
One critique, not of the photos themselves-they are super-but the soldiers are just too darn CLEAN. They all look groomed, shaved and starched-totally unlike troops that have been fighting out in dusty fields in sun and rain. They should go roll around in the dust and mud of the parking lot before the encampment begins.
