Burn Baby Burn

Thanks to help from Geren, I now have a CD burner installed in my main PC. Nero and I are burning down the house baby! The majority of this evening has been spent organizing all of my image files and burning them onto CDs for backup and "archival" purposes. I put the word "archival" in quotes for a reason. Contrary to popular belief, CDs do not last forever and are not recognized as an archival media. It is even doubtful that a CD will last a person's lifetime. They are made of plastics and plastics are made from volatile chemicals that breakdown over time. Hence the plastics in the CD itself will breakdown. As an archival tool they are sub par. Is there a way to permanently store images and other data for future generations? This is a question being studied by University of Maryland archivists and the answer they give at present is, "not with the current technologies." My friend Paul Hammer at the University of MD talked to me at length about this just last month. So what of permanence? Well for the mid-term CDs are better than leaving your image files, MP3 and other important data sitting on your hard drive or other magnetic media. A good hard drive crash, a nasty virus or an EMP and POOF! No more files. Burn baby burn!

I need a copy of Nero. I made the mistake of upgrading my old copy of Adaptec CD Creator (which worked all the time) to the latest Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator (which works very seldomly). Hmmmm... the web download of Nero 6 Suite is $70...

$70 !!!! My Memorex CD Burner came with Nero 5 and the whole dealie cost me $49.95. The CD with Nero on it says that it will only work with the CD-recorder it came with. I wonder if that's true?

The OEM Nero software will check the drive ID string. If it doesn't report back the correct OEM string, it won't start.

I'm also looking at a more recent version, and the full mastering suite as opposed to the basic package. $70 is fair.

$70 bucks does seem a decent price and it's for the newest version. If you already have a CD-recorder it makes little sense to buy a bundle with a new CD-R and an older version of the software. Although it would give you a backup CD-R and save you twenty bucks.

Now that I am collecting more digital images, I need to start thinking about burning them into CD's just in case "something" happens to my drives.

Martie, The best thing I have done for my images and for my piece of mind is to buy the CD-Recorder. Now I am not so worried about losing my images. If that happened I would be devestated!! I am burning all of my images to CD now. It also helps to free up all of that hard drive space. Get a CD-recorder as soon as you can and SAVE THOSE IMAGES!!! Peace, --Will

Yep, yep. I actually burn two copies of all my photos. One I keep and one goes to my parent's house just "in case". I usually print out contact sheets with 48 thumbnails to a sheet too. It takes forever to browse through a CD, but the sheets I can flip though quite quickly.
