The Broken Stone
Click on image for a larger view.
Recently I was able to explore and photograph the abandoned St. Paul's Cemetery here in Ellicott City, MD (formerly Ellicotts Mills). It was the cemetery for St. Paul's Catholic Church until the church moved to a new location in the early 1900's. Many of the grave stones are cracked, overturned and broken in this quiet and lonely place. I found the grave stone pictured above of particular interest. It is my submission for this week's Theme Thursday challenge. See the same image in color by clicking this link The Broken Stone (Color)
Such a sad picture; neglected graves break my heart (though they make great pics!).
Posted by: Somewhat on September 11, 2003 12:11 AMThe color shots shows me that ......in death there is still life. The gravestone with the green plant life is a great contrast.
Tell me.....just how close are you getting to the grave ;-)
Very intense image. Wonderful.
Posted by: Robin on September 11, 2003 11:30 AMThis is a real faith based image for me. Very moving and thought provoking. Thanks for showing it in both black and white and as color. I love both for the different modes they each show.

Posted by: kara on September 12, 2003 12:49 PMHi Will,
Thanks for dropping in. I have left you a message on the blog you commented on. Very powerful picture btw. I dread to think what state my grandparents graves are in. Probably nothing left now :(
Now that my life is returning to normality and having my husband home today after a business trip, I will be linking you to my site. Im way behind on doing things on my blog. I have had two heavy sessions of tracking Hubby's plane which I enjoy doing and it also keeps me calm.
Talk to you soon
Huggies
Lulu :)
Have an excellent week-end.
Posted by: Lulu on September 13, 2003 04:49 PMI don't know if anyone is still visiting this site, but if so I thought you would like to know that the cemetery is no longer forgotten. I am a parishioner of St. Paul's; most of us did not know that the cemetery existed until someone recently re-discovered it. Our youth group, some boyscouts, and several church members spent a few weekends cutting away underbrush and repairing the stones. The county repaired a bridge so that we can have safe and easy access. We are no longer using the cemetery, but at least we will not let it fall into neglect again! Donna
