Yesterday was the DVD/video release of The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers and of course I had to pick up two copies of the widescreen version on DVD. One for me and one for Marshall. Being that he works and lives downtown he'd have to head out to the burbs to get a copy and it was just easier and convenient for me to pick it for him. I even got it for $14.99 at Best Buy thanks to their price matching policy. They matched the Circuit City price for me and all I had to do was ask. What is amusing about this was all the people around me not taking advantage of the price match. You see, they will only price match if you tell them that another store has such-n-such for such-n-such price. They also need to make a phone call to confirm it, or you can show them a newspaper or magazine ad. Oh, the other caveat to this is that you have to go to the “lack of” customer service counter to do it. The only thing slower than a Best Buy customer service counter is the counter at any of the offices of the United States Postal Service. If you want fast service at the post office I suggest following my strategy and that is to go 15-20 minutes before they close. Those postal workers move pretty quickly then. Anyway with movie in hand it was time to head home, grab a small bite, pet the cats, and then head back out the door to get over to Marshall’s house to watch the film for our weekly Geek Knight night.
The LotR movies rate very highly with me on all the scales so I don’t need to give a review of The Two Towers. I love these films... 'nuff said. The DVD package is really nice with lots of cool extras. The best extra is the 10-minute sneak peak at The Return of the King. WOW! Is all I am going to say about it. Go buy the DVD and see the sneak peak for yourself. Marshall hooked up a nice pair of speakers to his TV for our viewing and listening pleasure (thanks MM) and there was a good supply of good beer (thanks again MM), and Mr. Hughes picked up two pizzas (thanks MH). The image and sound quality on the DVD is top-notch. An enjoyable, if late evening, was had by all. After dropping Keith off, I got home about 11:45 and went straight to bed. I am dragging my ass a little today, but still keeping my head above water here at the SLJ. I am looking forward to watching the rest of the special features over the next few days and watching the film a few more times. Maybe I can convince Jenne to watch TTT with me tonight. Fingers crossed.
Other LotR News to be excited about!
New Line Re-Releasing First Two Lord of the Rings Movies!
Source: Variety
Friday, August 22, 2003
New Line Cinema will re-release The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers , with additional scenes and footage added, just two weeks before the worldwide December 17 release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King .
The plan calls for putting the films on 100-150 screens in the top 10 U.S. markets. Many other U.S. cities will have one cinema participating in the special extended edition screenings. Running times for the extended editions are 208 minutes for "Fellowship of the Ring" and 214 minutes for "The Two Towers."
Advanced ticket sales are scheduled to begin in late September or early October on exhibitor Web sites and movie ticketing sites like Fandango, MovieFone and Movietickets.com.
Starting the week of Dec. 5, the extended DVD cut of "Fellowship of the Ring" will be released in some 100 or so theaters in the U.S. and in 20 theaters in Canada.
Then, the week of Dec. 12, "The Two Towers" will be released, leading up to a worldwide Dec. 16 daylong marathon, during which all three films will be shown back-to-back. The screenings that day will include a 3 p.m. showing of "Fellowship" followed by a 7 p.m. screening of "Two Towers" and then an 11 p.m. screening of "Return of the King," which will carry over into Dec. 17 -- the day of its global release.
Yup. Going to get mine tonight (I reserved it somewhere or another. The receipt is in my wallet). Only thing concerns me is that they didn't call me to tell me it's in. Bastards.
Anyway, should be the UgotaWanit Friday night feature.
Posted by: GerenM on August 27, 2003 01:37 PMI'm gonna wait for the Director's Cut special edition on 11/18, thanks. I like all the extras.
By the way, the Catonsville (21228) post office staff are pretty zippy. The only time I have to wait is when some dim-bulb is trying to negotiate the lowest rate for a package going to Sri Lanka by yak, and can't comprehend the customs forms.
I'll get the extended version of TTT as well. I have both versions of Fellowship. Sometimes I want to watch the theatrical release and others I want to sit for a good long butt-numb-a-thon. What I really wish I had is a DVD of the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode 4, A New Hope. I hate what Lucas did to it for his "special edition". Peter Jackson on the other hand knows what he's doing with movies.
Posted by: Will on August 27, 2003 02:28 PMI love that movie and as soon as I get paid this coming Friday I am all over it. :)
BTW thanks for visiting my blog.
